A sleek little slice of Italy on a quiet corner of Josefov, right across from the Spanish Synagogue. It's run by Ambiente (the Lokál people), pours Tonino Lamborghini coffee, and looks the part too: white and graphite interiors, chrome, and black parasols on the terrace. Come for an unhurried breakfast of croissant and espresso, or a plate of fresh pasta after walking around the Jewish Quarter. It's calm and properly made, and much better than the tourist traps a few streets away.

EMA is a small Prague specialty-coffee group whose first bar opened on Na Florenci in 2013; the same team runs the Alf & Bet bakery and roastery, so most of the coffee, bread and pastries are made in-house. The bars are bright, design-led and built for a quick espresso and a chat with the barista rather than a laptop afternoon, and the original near Masarykovo nádraží gets real queues at peak times. The Karlín branch, in the Palác Karlín building, is roomier, with a proper pastry counter and a mural nodding to the old ČKD factory graphics. In Palác Karlín, entrance from Křižíkova. Handy if you're staying in Karlín or on your way to Můj šálek kávy.

Ambiente's bakery with a kitchen in a converted industrial hall in Karlín, where the house rye-sourdough 'bread 33' is baked on beech wood every day. Breakfasts built around local farm produce run until late afternoon, alongside a lunch menu and a counter of sweet buns, kolache and poppy-seed loupáky to take away. Upstairs is Štangl, the group's tasting-menu restaurant.

The home café of doubleshot, one of Prague's best-known specialty roasters. It sits on a corner of Karlín's Křižíkova street, under brick arches with a big painted cup mural on the wall. The coffee is serious, and filter is the house speciality, but most people come for the all-day breakfast plates made with bread from the café's own bakery. It's a Karlín favourite and it fills up fast, especially at weekend brunch.

- A V60 filter from the rotating doubleshot single origins, or the tasting set of three
- Turkish eggs with dill pesto and chilli oil on house focaccia
- Okonomiyaki, or the blueberry French toast if you want something sweet

A tall-ceilinged corner café on Letná with peeling-plaster walls, a pink-framed mirror, chequerboard floors and long communal tables. Mornings run on coffee and pastries baked daily by its sister espresso bar Letec, brunch fills the middle of the day, and in the evening it turns into a spot for a drink or a beer from Broumov brewer Matuška.
